The BMDC’s
second annual MLK Unity Walk was held Saturday, Jan. 14, at Railroad Park. More than 500 people registered for the
walk – that’s more than double last year’s numbers. This year’s Unity Walk
honored late civil rights legends Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rev. Fred
Shuttlesworth and promoted healthy living all at once. Corporate sponsors for
the event included Ball Healthcare Services. The Birmingham News published an
article and a striking photo of the event the following day in its Sunday
edition.
A big thank you to those
who helped plan, sponsor, or took part in our inaugural MLK Unity Walk on
January 15, 2011, at Railroad Park. We had a great turnout. Over 200 people
showed up before the walk ended at noon to help us celebrate the legacy of Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.
TheMLK Unity Walk which was themed “Freeing the
Past to Make Room for Progress”, was all about bringing the community together
and raising awareness of our need to build an inclusive community that honors
and welcomes diversity.
Our corporate sponsors
who helped make the event possible were Royal Cup Coffee, Coca-Cola, and
Eastview Healthcare Center. Now, we turn our thoughts forward to having an even
bigger turnout for next year’s MLK Unity Walk!
